Abstract

Criticisms of the mass media are manifold. One that concerns this investigator is the criticism leveled against the quantity and quality of their content. These criticisms fall into the following general areas: (1) overemphasis on entertaining rather than on informing, (2) sensationalism rather than effective popularization, (3) insufficient interpretation and reluctance to exercise the opinion function, (4) lack of both quantity and quality in media content in smaller communities, and (5) bad taste and lack of social purpose in advertising, a criticism frequently extended to charges of cynical manipulation of consumer thought. The foundation of this study is the Associate Press day wire file for the week of April 10 through 16, 1961, as it went through the teletype circuit from Minneapolis and received by South Dakota member newspapers and well as at the TTS* monitor set.
