Abstract

Wetlands and waterfowl habitat in eastern South Dakota are protected by the US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) through fee-title acquisition and the conveyance of easements; and by the South Dakota Department of Game Fish and Parks (GF&P) through fee-title acquisition. The purpose of this study was to use GIS to describe the characteristics and distribution of protected and unprotected wetlands in eastern South Dakota. As of 30 Sept., 1994 wetland protection efforts by the FWS and GF&P have protected 2.26% of the upland habitat area and 21.89% of the wetland area in eastern South Dakota. Most unprotected wetlands are <0.5 ha in size and occur in the James River Lowland physiographic region.
