Abstract

The primary purpose of the present study was to develop a self-instructional learning package on the fundamentals of' home economics department planning for senior home economics education majors at South Dakota State University Department planning was a suitable area in which to develop a learning package since there were few available resources for teacher educators and students to use when studying the concept of new department planning. This is an area in which teachers, should be knowledgeable as they are expected to help in the planning of new departments and remodeling of departments already in use. This study was limited to home economics education students enrolled in Home Economics Education, Preparation for Student Teaching, at SDSU during the spring semester of 1973. Learning package is a self-instructional unit developed for learning one basic concept or idea in which the idea to be learned is broken into its several components. The individual learner may proceed at his owm pace and use a variety of learning media. Independent study. This term means a learning situation within the school day which allows a student to develop personal competencies through experiences as an individual but in interaction with others when needed. Real objects, books, films, recordings and tapes. Instructional objective. Statement of observable performance behavior that the student will be expected to perform. Concept. Major idea to be learned. Quest. Option which is student initiated. The purpose of this study was to develop a self-instructional learning package on the fundamentals of home economics department planning for senior home economics education majors at SDSU. These students have had no previous experience in department planning but have studied basic principles of floor plans and management in previous home economics courses. The final criterion of the success of the package was the extent to which the objectives were achieved. Department planning was a suitable area in which to develop a learning package since there were a few available resources for teacher educators and students to use when studying the concept of department planning. This is an area in which teachers should be knowledgeable as they are expected to help in the planning of new departments and remodeling of departments already in use.
