Abstract

The scope of this study was to determine the permeability of various bentonite and bentonite/ additive combinations to identify an optimal borehole sealant. An initial phase of the project which showed bentonite without the addition of additives produced low permeability values; the thermal conductivity values were not acceptable. Additives were then selected to increase the thermal conductivity of the mixtures while maintaining low permeability. This project was part of a larger project investigating the thermal performance of various bentonite grout mixtures.
