Description
To understand the federal land purchase program of 1933-42, one must have knowledge of the settlement of the Great Plains and the pattern of land ownership and land use which developed in that region. For that reason a brief review of the settlement of western South Dakota and the development of conditions leading to the federal purchase in that area will be presented.
