Description

This bulletin describes the changes in population which have occurred in South Dakota as a result of migration in to and out of the state. Data for this bulletin came from three sources: 1980 Census of Population, State of Residence in 1975 State of Residence in 1980. (PC80-S1-9). Washington, DC: Census Bureau. 1980 Census of Population, South Dakota. (PC80-1-A43). Washington, DC: Census Bureau. Goss, Sidney G. (1983). Selected Factors Migration for South Dakota: 1970-1980. South Dakota State University. Associated with the Age Specific Net Ph.D. dissertation. Brookings, SD: Table 1. The number of in- and out-migrants has been based on sample data and does not represent the 100% count. Columns 1 and 2 of this table list the number and percent of migrants in to South Dakota from other states. Column 3 is a ranking of the states according to the number of people each state contributed to South Dakota. The percents given in Column 3 are based on the total in-migration for South Dakota. Because the individual percents have been rounded, the total percent may not equal 10096. Columns 4 and 5 of this table list the number and percent of migrants out of South Dakota to other states. Column 6 is a ranking of the states according to the number of people who migrated to each state from South Dakota. The percents given in Column 6 are based on the total out-migration for South Dakota. Because the individual percents have been rounded, the total percent may not equal 100%. Column 8 lists the net-migration for each state in to or out of South Dakota. A positive number indicates net-in-migration whereas a negative number indicates a net-out-migration. Column 9 ranks the states according to their net contribution of people in to South Dakota. The higher the rank, the greater the contribution of people. (See more in text)
