Donald Dale Johnson (1925– ) of Brookings, South Dakota, contributed family and local history materials to South Dakota State University Archives and Special Collections. The Donald D. Johnson Papers include a translated narrative recounting the experiences of his grandfather, Johan Peter Johnson, a Swedish immigrant in South Dakota during the 1870s, and The Quill, a Marion High School publication issued in memory of Johnson’s parents. The collection highlights Swedish immigration to South Dakota and the preservation of family history through translation.
Historical Note
Donald Dale Johnson was born on February 4, 1925, to Adolph and Martha Johnson. A resident of Brookings, South Dakota, he remained unmarried. Johnson preserved family and local history through his contributions to the South Dakota State University Archives and Special Collections, including the Donald D. Johnson Papers. Content Notes
The Donald D. Johnson Papers contain a photocopy of a narrative written around 1918 describing the experiences of John P. (Johan Peter) Johnson, a Swedish immigrant and grandfather of the donor, during the years 1871 to 1879. The text was translated by Alma N. Lundin and read at the Benton Lutheran Church in South Dakota circa 1918. The original document is not included. The collection also includes The Quill, a publication produced by students at Marion High School in Marion, South Dakota, published by Donald D. Johnson in memory of Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Johnson of Hartford, South Dakota, presumed to be his parents.
The papers document Swedish immigration to South Dakota and the preservation of family and community history through translation and commemorative publication.
