Abstract
In 2006, South Dakota State University (SDSU) celebrated its 125th anniversary, marking a significant milestone in its history. To coordinate the commemoration, the university formed the 125th Anniversary Planning Committee, which oversaw all aspects of the celebration, including events, publications, and historical retrospectives. The committee, chaired by Carol J. Peterson, included university administrators, faculty, staff, students, and alumni, working together to highlight SDSU’s legacy and achievements. Their efforts culminated in a series of activities designed to honor the university’s past and engage the campus and broader community in its rich history.
The collection consists of materials documenting the anniversary celebration, including committee minutes, correspondence, event invitations, programs, publications, photographs, and memorabilia. It also contains audio-visual materials, such as video interviews with prominent individuals, including U.S. Senators and Representatives. The Survey of Accomplishments provides a record of key events and milestones since SDSU achieved university status in 1964. Additionally, the collection includes documentation from Cooperative Extension Service celebrations held across multiple South Dakota counties, showcasing the university’s statewide impact. Other notable items include a resolution from the South Dakota Legislative Assembly and commemorative artifacts, such as a replica of the Coughlin Campanile with a limestone piece from the original structure. Preserved in the SDSU Archives and Special Collections, this collection serves as a valuable resource for researchers, alumni, and university historians studying institutional history and milestone celebrations.
