Abstract

The Academic Women’s Equity Coalition at South Dakota State University was founded in 1983-84 following discussions among faculty about workplace fairness and professional opportunities for women. Open to all faculty members and others who supported its mission, the coalition focused on addressing concerns related to hiring, salaries, promotions, tenure, and leadership roles for women in academia. It also worked to encourage fair and consistent language use in professional settings and provided a forum for faculty to discuss shared concerns and advocate for improvements in university policies and practices.

This collection, spanning 1983 to 1992 with some undated materials, documents the coalition’s activities, organizational efforts, and initiatives. It includes administrative records, meeting agendas, correspondence, financial documents, and membership information. A 1984 inquiry into workplace treatment reflects the coalition’s role in examining professional concerns, while news clippings and event programs highlight its outreach efforts. The collection offers insight into faculty-led efforts to improve policies and professional opportunities within higher education, making it a valuable resource for studying institutional development and faculty collaboration.
