Abstract

Background: After four years of teaching capstone for mechanical engineering students, the faculty observed the students struggled to synthesize all their undergraduate learnings into the successful completion of a two-semester, project-based capstone course. The environmental science program, which is in the same department, needed a capstone similar to the engineering students’ experience.
Design/Method: To address both these issues, we redesigned Sustainable Engineering, which all students in the department are required to take, to have a project-based trajectory that would introduce several components of the senior design experience as well as address non-technical ABET outcomes for EAC and ANSAC Commissions. This work outlines the redesign process and why it is expected to improve the student’s experience in senior design as well as streamlining the assessment process for the environmental science students.
Results: The course redesign was successful in addressing all of the requirements for both engineering and environmental science curricula.
Conclusion: The redesign was successful and will be implemented in Spring of 2024. Student assessment will be used to determine whether the redesign was successful in improving performance on student outcomes for both programs.
