Abstract

The threat of violence in the workplace has become a serious concern among helping professionals, but has remained unexplored in rehabilitation counseling. A survey was conducted to assess the prevalence of selected threatening behaviors by consumers, their associates, or family members directed at rehabilitation counselors in Montana. Respondents indicated having experienced threats of both physical and non-physical harm. Male counselors reported that they were sometimes assigned threatening consumers as an informal safety procedure. The results support recent calls for increased safety preparation and awareness.
