Abstract

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic disease that affects Native Americans (NAs) at a disproportionally greater rate than non-Hispanic whites and causes a significant increase in morbidity and mortality rates when compared to other ethnic and racial populations. Self-reported deficiencies in understanding nutritional guidelines, societal struggles related to dietary constraints, co-morbid health disorders, and lack of family support and understanding of T2DM creates a negative impact on management of diabetes. The health care system has increased its focus on patient self-efficacy in disease self-management. There has also been a rapid expansion of Internet-based patient self-management programs, including diabetes self-management workshops. Better Choices Better Health/Diabetes® (BCBH/D®) is a program developed at Stanford University based on their experience with the original Chronic Disease Self-Management and Diabetes Self-Management programs that are offered in person. This project describes the development of a recruitment plan for a BCBH/D® telehealth workshop between a Native American (NA) urban setting and two NA reservations. A community based participatory research (CBPR) approach was utilized to develop a culturally sensitive recruitment plan for NAs with T2DM to enroll in the BCBH/D® telehealth workshop.
