Abstract
Multiple research studies demonstrate the benefits of multimodal pain management on postoperative pain management. However, there is minimal research on the effect of preoperative celecoxib on postoperative pain or on the effect of oral celecoxib on postoperative narcotic use. In addition, there is no research on oral celecoxib use in patients undergoing breast surgery. This practice innovation project (PIP) evaluated the effect of a single preoperative dose of oral celecoxib prior to breast surgery on postoperative narcotic use. Results of implementation revealed no significant difference in postoperative narcotic requirements after the administration of a single oral dose of preoperative celecoxib prior to breast surgery as compared to the control group. Limitations of the study were noted with emphasis on the small sample size, confounding variables, absence of randomization, and the lower power associated with the Mann-Whitney U test.
