Abstract
Introduction: In the United States (US), chronic lower back pain (CLBP) is one of the most common reasons for decreased daily function. Yoga, provides pain relief and increases physical and mental functioning among adults. Yoga’s significance as a CLBP intervention was evaluated by utilizing a literature review from specific databases using key search terms to find peer-reviewed evidence-based journals. Levels of evidence for journals were evaluated using the Johns Hopkins Nursing Evidence-Based Practice: Evidence Level and Quality Guide.
Evidence Summary: CLBP is a significant cause of disability in the US population. Yoga therapy implemented over 12weeks has shown improved benefits in relation to decreasing back pain and improving daily function.
Gaps: Gaps include gender, number of minutes yoga is conducted, and follow up on why participants drop out. Psychological aspects of pain should be evaluated to decrease barriers to treatment using physical activities. There also appears to be gaps in ethnicity reported for individuals in the studies.
Recommendations for practice: Future research should collect data in the number of minutes in therapy to understand the dose-effect relationship. Further, studies should be conducted into primary care on the effects of yoga on chronic lower back pain.
