Abstract

Introduction: By increasing nurses’ ability to communicate about vaccinations, empowerment is provided to help them overcome barriers preventing disease. A protocol that supports nurses learning motivational interviewing when discussing COVID-19 will increase nurse confidence and remove obstacles blocking vaccine administration.
Methods: A literature review was completed focusing on vaccine protocols. After abstract review, articles were considered that contained protocol specifics transferable to COVID-19 vaccination in a home healthcare setting. The preferred literature contained details regarding enabling nurses and building their confidence to overcome vaccine acceptance challenges. The themes identified involved the environment of home healthcare nursing, motivational interviewing, vaccine protocols, vaccine hesitancy, vaccine acceptance, standardizing nurse education, education required, and measuring nurse confidence discussing vaccination.
Gaps: Details regarding specific vaccine protocol methods or lessons learned were not found in the literature. There was a lack of protocol details for any vaccine initiatives. Grey literature was frequently used to include current COVID-19 recommendations.
Recommendations: Education for nursing staff and assessing their confidence with new materials ensures nurses are prepared to confront complex challenges such as vaccination. Enabling home health nurses with motivational interviewing skills supports COVID-19 vaccination efforts to reach rural communities.
