Abstract

Proper asthma education is vital to improved asthma control, quality of life, and patient satisfaction. Literature suggests self-management education, in the form of Asthma Action Plans (AAP), is superior to standard education in producing these positive outcomes through improvements in the ability of patients to recognize worsening symptoms and provisions regarding actions to take with respect to those worsening symptoms. The study presented here compared pre- and post-AAP asthma control test (ACT) scores to determine if AAPs improved upon asthma control in 48 participants over a three-month period in a Northwest Iowa rural facility. The average pre-AAP ACT score was 20.0, while the average post-AAP ACT score was 21.8. Statistical analysis comparing pre- and post-AAP ACT scores resulted in a p-value of less than 0.01, suggesting AAP administration, in fact, improved asthma control. Furthermore, the net number of participants becoming well-controlled after AAP administration was 11. These results suggest AAPs should continue to be utilized to foster better self-care agency of patients with asthma and improve overall asthma control. It is recommended that long-term evaluation of AAPs continue to determine their longevity and effectiveness.
