Abstract

Pneumococcal disease is linked to approximately 1.6 million deaths yearly (World Health Organization, 2017). Pneumococcal vaccination is a preventative care measure that can be deployed to decrease the incidence of pneumococcal disease in the susceptible older adult. Interventions at the provider level to increase vaccination rates such as using clinical decision support (CDS) reminders to generate electronic health record alerts to notify providers of patient eligibility for pneumococcal vaccine improve pneumococcal vaccination rates in older adults. This project compared pneumococcal vaccination rates before and after implementing the use of a CDS reminder with a pilot group of clinicians at a rural clinic. The project yielded an increase in pneumococcal vaccination rates when compared to the control period. Statistical analysis concluded a meaningful difference exists between the control and intervention groups which confirmed the effectiveness of using a CDS reminder to increase pneumococcal vaccination rates. With continued improvement to the CDS reminder tool, the organization that hosted the DNP project will be able to continue using the CDS reminders to improve quality care of for rural patients.
