Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of the project was to evaluate the impact of an employee recognition program on job satisfaction among operating room staff at an urban Midwest outpatient surgery center.
Background: Assessing employee satisfaction in the operating room is important for healthcare organizations to ensure staff is engaged, focused, and productive. A gap has been identified in healthcare organizations’ ability to offer empowerment, satisfaction, and value to a large portion of their workforce.
Design and Methods: The approach used convenience sampling with a quasi-experimental study design. Thirty operating room staff members completed the Employee Engagement Survey and pre-test versus post-test scores were compared in the personal recognition and overall satisfaction categories.
Results: The findings of the project suggested improvement among the categories of personal recognition and overall job satisfaction.
Conclusion: The establishment of an employee recognition program helps create a healthy work environment in which staff are satisfied, committed, and engaged. Implications for nursing: The results of the project help bridge the gap in evidence by establishing the efficacy and sustainability of an employee recognition program into clinical practice. The project offers the foundation needed for other healthcare organizations to create, implement, and sustain an employee recognition program of their own.
