Abstract

Hand hygiene (HH) has been shown to be a key component in reducing the transmission of organisms in the health care setting yet it is reported HH occurs less than half of the time when indicated. Lack of HH is the leading cause of health care-associated infections and leads to the spread of multi-resistant organisms costing the United States health care system up to $45 billion annually. The Johns Hopkins Nursing Evidence Based Practice model was used to form the practice question: In RNs working in the patient care unit (PCU) (P), does a multimodal HH intervention, including classroom education, visual demonstration, and visual reminders (I), compared to current knowledge and compliance rates (C), increase RNs’ knowledge and HH compliance rates for the PCU (O), over a 6-week period (T)? Methods for this project included an educational intervention for RNs on when and how to complete HH. Pre, post, and six-week post-intervention data were collected and compared. Hand hygiene compliance (HHC) rate data from pre and post-intervention were also compared along with aggregate data from one-year prior.
