Abstract

The condensation of various phenols with phthalic anhydride is well known. In many cases the first preparation was made so long ago that our library contains no record of the author who first reported the condensation. A table of common indicators lists the following compounds which are the result of the condensation of phenols with phthalic anhydride: tetraiodofluoescein, dichlorofluoresfcein, b-naphtholphthalein, o-cresolphthalein, phenopthalein, and thymolphthalein. In addition to these many sulfonphthaleins are well known. These compounds are commonly prepared by the reation of the phenol with phthalic anhydride in the presence of concentrated sulfuric acid at elevated temperatures, for varying lengths of time.
