Abstract
This exploratory study examined facial expressions exhibited by the character Carl Frederickson in the animated feature film UP. The researcher conducted a deductive content analysis utilizing Ekman's (1971) typology of the six universal facial expressions of Anger, Disgust, Fear, Happiness, Sadness, and Surprise in order to determine if animated facial expressions exhibit the same characteristics as human facial expressions. The findings indicate that animated facial expressions do exhibit the same characteristics as human facial expressions. A discussion of limitations and possible avenues for further research are also included.
