Abstract
This study looked at reasons why National Football League (NFL) teams use colleges or universities for training camp, the steps in recruiting an NFL team to use one's campus for training camp, the advantages and disadvantages to institutions and communities hosting NFL training camps, the requirements NFL teams have in training camp locations, and whether South Dakota State University (SDSU) can effectively host an NFL training camp. First, the colleges and universities hosting NFL training camps, the NFL teams using an institution for training camp, and the SDSU football alumni who have played or are playing in the NFL were surveyed regarding their training camp experiences. The data from these surveys was collected and analyzed. Next, representatives of SDSU were interviewed regarding their area of expertise. Next, representatives of businesses in Brookings were interviewed to assess the amount of support SDSU might obtain from the community in hosting an NFL training camp. They were also asked their opinions on the advantages and disadvantages to the community if SDSU hosted an NFL training camp. This information was then compared with the data collected from the surveys to determine if it is desirable for SDSU to pursue hosting an NFL training camp. The study concludes that SDSU would be in a position to host an NFL training camp after making some improvements, including the construction or renovation of locker and training room facilities. Other minor improvements would need to be made, but could be negotiated between the university and an NFL team that may use SDSU for its training camp location.
