Abstract

Horseradish peroxidase is a well-known enzyme and one that is often studied. It is well suited for enzyme studies due to its availability, relative ease of preparation, and stability. Although a wealth of knowledge has been gained about this enzyme, very little can actually be said about the mechanism of the reaction. Much of the work that has been done has been concerned with the reaction with hydrogen peroxide. Methyl and ethyl hydroperoxides have also been studied in some detail but only a very few references can be found concerning the action of the enzyme on other organic peroxides. The references which can be found usually state whether the reaction does or does not proceed and give very little kinetic data. As a result, this study was undertaken with the hope that a knowledge of the effect of horseradish peroxidase on some of the higher organic peroxides would lead to an increased understanding of the enzyme.
