Abstract

The genus Aeolus Eschscholtz is redefined. Fourteen species distributed throughout Canada, the United States and northern Mexico are taxonomically revised. These species are figured, redescribed or described as new, and an identification key is provided for their separation. Aeolus petilus new species and A. valentini new species are described from the United States. The types of twelve previously described species were examined and a neotype was designated for A. mellillus (Say). The species synonymies proposed here are as follows: Aeolus com is (Leconte) and Aeolus marginicollis (Horn) are new synonyms of Aeolus livens (LeConte ); Aeolus curtipennis (Schwarz) is a new synonym of Aeolus mellillus, and Aeolus perversus (Brown) is a new synonym of Aeolus scutellatus (Schaeffer). Newly recognized homonymies are: Aeolus thoracicus (Schaeffer) is a junior homonym of Aeolus thoracicus Candeze and is renamed Aeolus pseudothoracicus new name; Aeolus cribratus Candeze is a junior homonym of Aeolus cribratus (LeConte) and is renamed Aeolus brasiliensis new name; Aeolus lepidus Candeze is a junior homonym of Aeolus lepidus (LeConte) and is renamed Aeolus candezei new name; Aeolus comis Candeze is a junior homonym of Aeolus co mis (LeConte) and is renamed Aeolus colombianus new name. The holotype of Drasterius grandicollis Hom was found to be not referable to Aeolus and is transfered to Heteroderes Latreille, as H grandicollis (Hom) new combination.
