Abstract

Recognizing the urgent need of higher educational and occupational attainment among rural youth in South Dakota, a research design was devised which would reveal the social and personal factors associated with educational and occupational aspiration levels. If a relationship between these factors and high and low levels of aspiration exists, this information should be of interest to educators, parents, and adult s concerned with the youth potential of South Dakota. This study is a part of a research project conducted by the Rural Sociology Department at South Dakota State University in the spring of 1967. The general aims of the original study were to provide greater understanding of rural youth in South Dakota and to provide information essential to more adequate counseling and guidance in the rural high schools of the state. The objectives of the present study are to describe a small sample of rural South Dakota youth and to investigate the social and personal factors associated with t heir educational and occupational aspiration levels.
