Abstract

A documented history of State University Theatre has not been compiled since 1972. The purpose of this study is to examine the history of State University Theatre from 1972-1992. The study will include aspects of the theatre program including: budgets; facilities, plays, directors, and styles of scripts. The mainstage and major studio productions are the focus of this study. The aspects which will be excluded are: experimental theatre, Prairie Repertory Theatre, opera, Capers (a show produced by Alpha Psi Omega, academic classes, and forensic activities. Although the pertinent literature lacks any analysis of depth on the problem of this paper, the absence alone does not justify the study. This researcher feels the proposal is justified for two reasons:
A. A comprehensive study of State University Theatre has not been completed for the years from 1972 to 1992. This study will provide a careful study of the productions, the attendance, the budgets, and the facilities during this period of time. State University Theatre has expanded at an enormous rate becoming a successful regional theatre, thus providing_ this researcher with an opportunity to compile a comprehensive study on its accomplishments.
B. It is hoped that this study will provide the trends in consistency of the scripts presented and the role of theatre within the University community. It is further hoped that this study will provide an insight into the continuing goals of State University Theatre.
