Abstract
The overall objective of this study is to examine the financial condition of South Dakota’s farm sector. South Dakota agriculture is heavily impacted by economic changes taking place in the nation and in the world. Macroeconomic policies, input markets and international linkages highly influence the agricultural sector. Hence, one objective of this paper will be to discuss those economic forces that determine and shape the financial position of South Dakota’s farming sector. The specific objectives are: 1) To examine changing financial conditions in agriculture by analysis of annual aggregate financial statements of the South Dakota farm sector from 1969-1989. 2) To determine the extent of financial pressures exhibited in the South Dakota farm sectors using solvency, liquidity, debt servicing, and profitability ratios from 1969-1989. 3) To examine the nature of macroeconomic, international policies, and other major factors underlying financial changes if the South Dakota farming sector from 1969-1989.
