Abstract

The overall objective of this project is to provide decision makers with information about South Dakota CRP (Conservation Reserve Program) contracts and recommend appropriate public policy and management options. Specific objectives are to: 1. Identify the major physical, agronomic, environmental, and business characteristics of CRP contracts in South Dakota that are held by a random sample of CRP contract holders. 2. Identify the major socio-economic and farm business characteristics of the random sample of South Dakota CRP contract holders and their major reasons for participation in the CRP program. 3. Identify CRP contract holders’ future plans concerning land use and agricultural management practices for their CRP land after their contracts expire. 4. Identify the relative importance of public policy and economic factors that could change future CRP land decisions of South Dakota contract holders. 5. Identify the relative importance of socio-economic, environmental, and management factors affecting South Dakota CRP contract holders’ decisions about specific post-CRP contract land uses. 6. Based on the results of objectives 1-5, draw some conclusions concerning selected public policy and management options.
