Abstract
Track and field teams at South Dakota State University have played an important part in the history of this institution and sources should be available describing past achievements on the athletic fields. As a history of intercollegiate track and field teams at South Dakota State University has never before been written, such a history would be an important step in compiling the histories of all the intercollegiate sports at South Dakota State University. Histories of football, basketball, and athletics in general at South Dakota State University have been compiled in the last few years. Therefore, the addition of a history tracing the development of track and field in needed to eventually provide a complete record of all the intercollegiate athletic sports at State University. The purpose of this study was to collect, record, and organize chronologically, facts and data pertaining to the origin and development of varsity intercollegiate track and field as South Dakota State University into one permanent volume. This will include mention of the coaches, athletes, athletic directors and other important people who played an active role in the development of track and field at South Dakota State University.
