Abstract

The overall objective of this research effort is to analyze and compare sustainable and conventional farming systems from the standpoint of risk management, with special attention to production risk. Specific research objectives are to: (1) Systematically identify the sources of production, price, and financial risk, and attempt to determine those sources that have special importance in the choice between sustainable and conventional agriculture. (2) Develop and apply a framework for assessing and comparing the extent of risk in sustainable and conventional systems. (3) Determine how sustainable agriculture fits into farmers' risk management strategies. This involves drawing conclusions and making recommendations for farmers and policymakers on how to use sustainable agriculture to meet the twin goals of reasonable profit and manageable risk.
