Abstract
This thesis presents a geographic assessment of the physical changes and resulting cultural adaptations that have occurred in and around Lake Thompson, South Dakota, from the period of first settlement to 1991. The overall intent of this study is to analyze a particular natural hazard as an interaction of humans and the natural environment. A specific objective is to identify factors influencing human occupance on the lake bed [sic] that resulted in a disaster involving thousands of acres of inundated farmland and the resultant landuse [sic] changes and economic loss.
