Abstract

Since a study of the Dakota railroads has not been written before, and because of the increasing interest in the early railroads, an objective of this thesis was to develop an economic history of each of the railroads that were built in or into Dakota Territory. Together with the study of each railway there is a study of the major economic problems that resulted from the amazingly rapid construction of over 4,000 miles of railroads.
