Abstract
The main objective of this thesis will be to identify the retained ownership strategies, both on-farm and off-farm, that will allow producers to increase returns within acceptable levels of risk. The variables of output prices, feed costs, transportation costs, and yardage costs of retained ownership will be taken into consideration. The specific objectives are to: 1. determine the profit maximizing retained ownership alternatives; and, 2. determine the level of risk involved in alternative retained ownership programs. Additional insight will be gained by identifying the influence of calf weight and age and geographic location on profitability of retained ownership.
