Abstract

This study was a direct comparison study of the projections of future health care services in South Dakota by Registered Nurses, Advanced Practice Nurses and Administrators. A random sample of the health care providers was used in each target group. The research instrument was a mailed survey to elicit provider opinions on a five point Likert scale. Data was analyzed using the ANOVA (analysis of variance) Post Hoc Least Squares Difference tests. All three groups agreed that rural hospitals will serve as points of entry into the health care system, APNs will play a major role in primary care in underserved areas, and community-based roles for nurses will increase. RNs, most APNs and Administrators agreed that health care in the state will be delivered through managed care systems. CRNA's disagreed. There was no significant differences reported among provider opinions for research questions related to type of health care settings, type of provider and type of provider role. There was also no significant differences reported among providers in their opinions related to the type of health care system of the future, however, CRNA's disagreed with all other providers over the extent of managed care that will permeate the state.
