Description

A sanitary sewage disposal system is necessary to dispose of human excreta in rural homes where public sewers are not available. Sewage wastes, if not properly disposed of, are dangerous because they contain living bacteria and viruses, some of which are of disease producing types. For this reason, every effort should be made to prevent health problems and to dispose of all human wastes so that no opportunity will exist for contamination of water or food. This circular outlines the basic principles of design, construction, installation, and maintenance of a septic tank and subsurface disposal system for rural residences where public sewers are inaccessible or impractical.
