Description
The minerals that are required to perform essential functions in the dairy cow's body are calcium, phosphorus, sodium, chloride, magnesium, potassium, sulfur, iodine, cobalt, zinc, manganese, copper, iron, selenium, and molybdenum. Those in bold type are termed the macro mineral elements since they are required in relatively large amounts compared to the others which are needed in trace amounts. Although any of these may be deficient in the feed supply in certain areas, the macro elements constitute 70 to 80 percent of all inorganic material in the body and are the ones we are most concerned about under South Dakota conditions.
