Description
Lice and mites are the major external parasites of poultry in South Dakota. They cause immediate loss in the poultry flock by decreasing weight gains and egg production, and they are carriers of disease. Lice and mire infestations — if allowed to go untreated — eventually can cause deaths in birds. Flies have become an important secondary pest of poultry housing, especially in suburban communities. Build-up of large amounts of manure and refuse under the roosts serves as an ideal fly breeding area. Flies often migrate from the poultry house to nearby dwellings and become a severe nuisance.
