Description
This destructive fungus disease of American elms was first observed in Holland in 1919 and since then has been commonly called Dutch elm disease. The fungus was brought into this country in 1930 on elm wood used for making veneer. The disease has spread rapidly in this country and caused heavy losses (figure 1). It is found in over 20 northeastern, eastern, and central states where American elms are grown.
