Abstract

This manuscript titled “In the Blizzard” was written by Louis Grewing and relates events that occurred during a blizzard in South Dakota in March 1882. It was translated from old German script into English by Carl R. Sunde, Professor of German at South Dakota State University.

Historical Note

The original manuscript of “In the Blizzard” relates events that occurred during a blizzard that occurred in South Dakota during March, 1882 and was written by Louis Grewing (1843-1908). His son, Frederick Grewing (1867-1937), states in a note next to the text that he had copied the document. The location of the original is unknown. Other notes indicate that Frederick planned to submit the story for publication. The earliest publication date found was 1949, twelve years after his death.

A copy of the Frederick Grewing Manuscript "In the Blizzard" was given to Carl R. Sunde, Professor of German at South Dakota State University, by Carlene Aro, a descendent of the original author, for translation from the handwritten, old German script into English. A small grant from the South Dakota State University research support fund was given to Mr. Sunde that permitted translation of and research about the document.

Content Notes

Composed of a manuscript titled “In the Blizzard,” newspaper accounts, photos and other background information. Included are versions printed by the "Evangelisches Gemeindeblatt," a Lutheran church bulletin written in German from Madison, Wisconsin, and by the Watertown Public Opinion, which features a translation of that article by Reverend Elwood Habermann and other useful information. Frederick's role as editor and copier of the original document is omitted in Reverend Habermann's translation as well as several other significant details presumably unknown to him.
