Historical Note

The South Dakota Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (S.D.A.I.A.W.) was established in 1971. According to the association’s guidelines, the purpose of the association was to:

  1. Organize and conduct intercollegiate sports for the college women of South Dakota,
  2. Serve as a liaison with national organizations, DGWS, and Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW),
  3. Elevate the level of competition for skilled women athletes,
  4. Establish guidelines and standards for intercollegiate competition for women, and
  5. Publicize all phases of competitive sports.

Membership in the association was open to all higher education institutions in South Dakota that offered physical education and athletics to women. Membership between 1971 and 1981 included Augustana College, Black Hills State College, Dakota State College, Dakota Wesleyan University, Huron College, Mount Marty College, Northern State College, South Dakota State University, Sioux Falls College, South Dakota Technical College, University of South Dakota, and Yankton College.

The S.D.A.I.A.W. was a member of Region VI of the A.I.A.W. In the early 1980s, the national A.I.A.W. was facing decreased funding and membership due to the NCAA’s inclusion of women’s athletics. The S.D.A.I.A.W. ceased operating on June 15, 1982. The national The A.I.A.W. dissolved in 1983.
