Abstract

Ambulatory care pharmacy plays a critical role in optimizing patients’ medication therapy and ensuring their adherence and safety. Pharmacists who practice in ambulatory care settings are highly trained professionals with the knowledge and expertise to make a substantial impact on patient care. Many people, including healthcare professionals, are unaware of everything that ambulatory care pharmacy encompasses and has to offer. Ambulatory care pharmacists work in outpatient settings to provide medication counseling, chronic disease state management, therapeutic recommendations, and other pharmaceutical services. Communication between pharmacists and patients and patient medication adherence have been studied, but there is extremely limited research on pharmacists’ own perceptions of how receptive patients are to their counseling. When the field is narrowed to ambulatory care pharmacists specifically, the amount of available research is even less. Understanding how ambulatory care pharmacists perceive their work is crucial in optimizing pharmacist-led interventions, identifying barriers, and improving patient engagement and compliance. This study seeks to explore ambulatory care pharmacists’ perspectives on their patient interactions and counseling, in order to provide insights that can help improve upon the field of ambulatory pharmacy and ensure we are fully utilizing ambulatory care pharmacists’ expertise.
