The Census that Almost Wasn’t: The Contentious Politics of Census 2021 in Great Britain

Patricia Ahmed, South Dakota State University

University Center, Sioux Falls

2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

There is a growing movement in Great Britain to abolish the census. This development was spearheaded by conservative politicians, who argued that the census was both prohibitively expensive (Maude 2014) and a violation of citizens’ privacy rights (Dorling 2013:6). Other Anti-Census activists argued that data could be gathered from various local agencies could be gathered and aggregated, in much more streamlined and cost effective process. Although key stakeholders in academia, local government, and civil society vigorously fought these proposals, the census's existence in the UK remains distinctively in doubt. Ultimately, a compromise was reached: the 2021 census will be given, but in a primarily online format (Cadman 2014; Maude 2014). However, the implementation of censuses beyond 2021 remains questionable (Cadman 2014; Maude 2014).
