Abstract
The following study is an analysis of a sample of small town and rural perceptions and knowledge of elder abuse. A synthesis of role and identity theories utilized within a broad symbolic interactionist framework has guided this investigation. In June 2005, questionnaires were mailed to members of a general, farm based organization in North Dakota to establish a baseline of small town and rural perceptions and knowledge of elder abuse. Analysis revealed that the rural respondents are aware of the six dimensions of elder abuse as noted in the literature and have previous knowledge of elder abuse.
