Abstract
This paper suggests that the development of press freedom in Taiwan can be divided into three periods after KMT (Kuomintang) retreated to the island in 1949. It also shows that the levels of press freedom during the three periods have varied remarkably. The evolution of Taiwan press freedom and subsequent changes in the nation are discussed to help build up a better understanding of the three periods. The author presents a flow chart that depicts the process of democratization and press freedom in Taiwan.
