Abstract

Bean pod mottle virus (BPMV) (genus: Comovirus, family: Comoviridae ), a widespread pathogen of legumes, was evaluated on ten experimental soybean lines and cultivars during 2002 and 2003 at two sites in South Dakota. The soybeans evaluated in this study were (Asgrow) Ag2302, (Dekalb) DK 828-51, SD00-1312R, SD93-828E, SD99-026R, SD99- 048R, SD99-085R, SD99-096R, SD99-99R, and (Thompson) T-3205RR. Plants were spray-inoculated at the V3-V5 stage with sap extract (1 :10 dilution of BPMV-infected Phaselous vulgaris cv. Provider macerated in 0.02 M Na and K PO4 buffer pH 7.2) with 1 % silica carbide (w/v) added at 552 kPa. Eight-row plots were divided in a randomized split plot design with four replications. For every experimental soybean line and cultivar, a BPMVinoculated soybean plot and a non-inoculated control soybean plot were paired for comparison. Comparisons of BPMV-inoculated versus non-inoculated treatments indicated that all experimental soybean lines and cultivars were significantly affected by BPMV infection (P < 0.0001). Yield losses ranged from 0.9 % to 19.4 % in 2002 and 16.8 % to 56.6 % in 2003. BPMV significantly affected test weight (P = 0.0012), number of nodes per soybean plant (P = 0.0012), number of soybean pods per plant (P < 0.0001), number of seeds per plant (P < 0.0001 ), number of seeds per pod (P < 0.0001 ), percentage of oil in soybean seed (P < 0.0001 ), percentage of protein in soybean seed (P < 0.0001 ), height (P < 0.0001), disease incidence (P < 0.0001 ), and lodging (P = 0.0494). Highly significant differences were also observed in leaf rating for mottling and distortion and plot rating for mottling and distortion.
