Abstract
The objective of this research project was to ascertain, through field inventory, as much as possible about South Dakota's community forest structure and composition. A 5% sample of 16 incorporated communities was used to represent the state's community forest. Four community classes were used to evaluate community forest structure and composition. Data obtained from street-tree inventories were addresses, street names, street sides, site numbers, species identification, diameter breast height (DBH), heights, conditions, maintenance needed, planting space availability, and electrical and hardscape occurrences. The study concluded that South Dakota's community forest is composed of young to mature trees, in good to fair condition, and has an abundance of available planting space. This research is a baseline study that demonstrates the need for further community forest inventories.
