Abstract

A Geographic Information System (GIS) is a system for creating and managing spatial data and associated attributes. Data acquired by remote sensors plays an important role in GIS, so remote sensing technology is extremely useful. However, current traditional database management systems, such as MySQL, Oracle, and PostgreSQL, are not suitable for an image database because they can not manipulate images. In order to turn one of these into an image database, a layer between the database and the clients is required. This layer wraps together the database system, image manipulation utilities, and process commands given by clients. This thesis suggests XML-RPC is a solution to this problem. XML-RPC is a remote procedure using HTTP as the transport and XML as the encoding. In this thesis I will develop and evaluate the image database web service using XML-RPC.
