Abstract

End stage renal disease has a significant impact on a large number of patients in the United States. Unless patients comply with dietary, fluid, and medication regimens, they may experience fluid overload, hyperkalemia, and hyperphosphotemia, which can result in increased morbidity and premature death (Blackburn, 1977). This study was designed to determine the effectiveness of patient education upon dietary and medication compliance using a collaborative interdisciplinary (team) approach. A retrospective chart review showed that an interdisciplinary (team) approach to treatment of dialysis patients was not associated with a statistically significant decrease in interdialytic weight gain and predialysis serum potassium and phosphate levels. There are several implications for further study including more frequent interventions by a nurse practitioner.
