Abstract
The purpose of his study was to determine which method of weight loss (team led approach or traditional method) was more successful. The team-led approach consisted of participants having clinical visits with a physician, registered dietician, and exercise physiologist while the traditional method involved participants striving to lose weight on their own through diet and exercise. Eighty-four participants were recruited from the Bariatric Clinic to allow access to their medical records for six consecutive weight-loss appointments over a 10-week period. Data was collected on patients' weight, percentage of body fat, and body mass index. The data collected from the clinic participants was compared to the traditional group. The traditional group consisted of thirteen participants who were recruited from the Wellness Center. The traditional group followed the same structure as the bariatric group as far as appointment visits and data collected. The traditional group was individual based with no clinical visits with a physician, registered dietician, or exercise physiologist. The traditional group had a 1.1 % weight loss over a I 0-week period and a 0.3% change in body fat percentage. Participants in the bariatric clinic had a 10.9% weight loss over a IO-week period, and achieved a 5.0% change in body fat. Based on these findings it appears that a team-led approach to weight loss resulted in a greater amount of body weight loss, as well as a greater decline in body fat than a traditional method of weight loss.
