Abstract
An experimental research study was funded by Nucor to be completed at South Dakota State University. This study included multiple projects to be completed analyzing the structural behavior of cold-formed steel/concrete load distribution members (LDM's). This particular project focused on the behavior of the LDM when joist stubs were added to the cross section and whether the joist provided sufficient attachment for the concrete and cold-formed steel (CFS) to act compositely. Fifteen specimens, with five assemblies, were constructed, instrumented, and tested to investigate the proposed LDM effectiveness. Three point loads were applied to each specimen and four roller supports were used to provide the reactions. Load was applied incrementally until failure was observed in the specimen. This loading was used to simulate story loads bearing directly on the LDM. Load, deflection, and strain data were collected throughout the testing procedure to evaluate the strength and serviceability of the LDM. Once the testing was completed, an analytical study was done to evaluate the performance of each specimen. An explanation of the observed cracking pattern and analysis using the ACI 2008 Code Strut-and-Tie Method were completed. The scope of this research included a literature review, fabrication, instrumentation, load testing, analytical study, and evaluation of the five assembly's individual performance.
